Wild hogs are one of the most thrilling animals to hunt. Not only is it an adrenaline rush, but also a necessary form of population control. Feral boars are an invasive species in the US, and experts estimate they cause over $1.5 billion in damage annually.

Unfortunately, these animals’ behaviors make them incredibly adaptive. They have low mortality rates and reproduce rapidly. Hunters must help control the population to protect the ecosystem, but that requires high-quality optics. Read on to determine the best night vision scope for hog hunting so you can help fight this invasive species:

NightForce NXS Compact Rifle Scope

NIGHTFORCENXS 2.5-10x42mm F2 30mm Tube Durable Precise Accurate Black Gun Scope - ZeroStop Parallax Adjustable Second Focal Plane Illuminated Hunting Scope, Moar - 30 MOA (C458)

The NightForce NXS is the best night vision scope on the market. It’s on the pricier side, but I find it’s worth it for the high-quality features. Here’s why I recommend this product:

When hog hunting, I need a wide range to scope out my prey. The NXS sees objects from 25 yards away or further. It uses adjustable parallax, allowing me to focus on the reticle. This technology helps me make a clear shot, no matter the distance or movement of the target.

It’s impressive that this product lets hunters see so far while remaining lightweight. Many similar optics are significantly heavier. This attachment won’t add too much weight to the firearm and doesn’t make me feel like I’m lugging around a bag of boulders while hunting hogs.

Another unique feature of the NXS is the Power Throw Level. I love this feature because it means I can zoom in or out in less than a second. It’s perfect for cold mornings when I bundle up for warmth because my gloved hands don’t slow it down.

This scope is also customizable, fitting my personal preferences. I can change the brightness from dim to bright, which is ideal on long hunts as the moonlight shifts. Other products sometimes blind me with excessively lit screens that aren’t adjustable, but this isn’t the case with the NXS.

Pros:

  • Longest range
  • It only weighs 1.28 pounds
  • All five-star ratings
  • Adjustable brightness

Cons:

  • Expensive

Armasight Vulcan Night Vision Scope

Armasight Vulcan Night Vision Scope

The Armasight Vulcan is a very expensive but high-quality night vision optic at nearly $5.5k. I recommend this scope for expert hunters dedicated to hunting hogs. Here’s what this product offers:

The Vulcan is my go-to for a precise shot in inclement weather. This scope has me covered when I need to take down a hog in the middle of a downpour. Not only is it waterproof, but also protected against dust and sand. The IR optics are shock-protected, helping me see my prey while staying safe.

I can equip and unequip the Vulcan in seconds, ensuring I’m not wasting time changing my gear during a hunt. The illuminated reticle is perfect for night trips. Like the NXS, it has adjustable brightness so I can see without going blind. Adjusting it’s simple, allowing me to line up the perfect shot with a 4.5X zoom.

On the downside, this optic is rather heavy. It adds a lot of weight to my gun, making it challenging to carry long distances. It took me a while to adjust the settings to where I wanted them, but once I did, it performed amazingly.

Although expensive, this scope is worth it for hunters seeking the most precise shot. It comes with a limited three-year warranty, as well.

Pros:

  • 4.5X magnification
  • Waterproof
  • Weatherproof
  • Wireless remote control

Cons:

  • Most expensive
  • Weights 2.4 pounds
  • Several adjustments are required during the setup

BESTSIGHT Night Vision Scope

BESTSIGHT Night Vision Scope,DIY Night Vision(Day and Night),Quick Installation Barrle,5" Display Screen with 5w 850nm Infrared Illuminator,View 200m in Night,for 38-44mm Eyepiece Scope(Optic Sight)

This BESTSIGHT optic is an excellent option for hunters on a budget. It’s much cheaper than other similar products. Here’s what buyers receive:

Although it’s labeled a night vision scope, this product is a system designed to turn an existing optic into a suitable product. The 360-degree camera provides high-quality nighttime visuals.

I had no trouble spotting and taking down massive hogs with the sliding infrared flashlight. The range is up to 219 yards, which is better than the more expansive options on this list.

All the pieces may seem overwhelming at first. However, my package included highly-detailed instructions that made adding it to my scope simple. I had the whole system put together within 15 minutes.

When I was on a tight budget and already had an optic, this BESTSIGHT system was perfect for converting to nighttime hunting. I was able to kill my fair share of hogs with it. However, there are some downsides buyers need to consider before purchasing.

The system doesn’t include a battery, so hunters must factor in this extra cost. It’s also pretty heavy: 2.14 pounds. It’s a lot of weight to add to a gun, which doesn’t even include the scope itself.

I recommend using this system on a lightweight gun. This way, the gear isn’t an overwhelming load on a long hunt.

Pros:

  • Detailed instructions for simple setup
  • The system turns any rifle scope into night vision
  • 360-degree adjustable camera

Cons:

  • Battery not included
  • Weighs 2.14 pounds
  • The system doesn’t include a scope

ATN X-Sight 4K Pro Smart Scope

ATN X-Sight 4K Pro Smart Day/Night Hunting Scope w/ Ballistics Calc, 3864x2218 Resolution, Video Record, Wi-Fi, 18hrs+ Battery

Hog hunters who want all the extra bells and whistles should consider buying the X-SIGHT 4K Pro. Here’s why I was impressed by the technological features of this optic:

The X-Sight Pro has a laser rangefinder that works for up to 1,000 yards. It takes that data and sends it via Bluetooth to the ballistics calculator, which adjusts the reticle accordingly. It took some pressure off me to make the perfect shot on a stressful hog hunt.

This scope has one of the most powerful IR illuminators I’ve seen. The Supernova is perfect for long-range night hunting. Additionally, the 4K resolution created a high-quality picture, so I could easily see my target.

I could also record breathtaking footage of my hunts with the X-Sight Pro. The video function is recoil activated, so I’m not left fumbling with it in the heat of the moment. Plus, the product never died in the middle of an excursion, as the battery holds 22 hours of charge.

I have to acknowledge the cons of this option, though. Like many other night vision scopes, the X-Sight Pro is on the heavier side. Several users reported issues with stripped screws. Additionally, the camera didn’t read some brands of SD cards, despite them meeting the requirements.

Pros:

  • Impressive range
  • Bluetooth ballistics calculator
  • Included long-range illuminator
  • Charge lasts up to 22 hours
  • High resolution

Cons:

  • Weighs 2.2 pounds
  • Issues with stripped screws
  • Some SD cards aren’t recognized

ATN X-Sight LTV Scope

ATN X-Sight LTV 3-9x Day Night Hunting Rifle Scope , Black

The X-Sight LTV is another top-notch night vision optic option for hunters who love the 4K Pro model but are on a tighter budget. It doesn’t have all the same tech, but it still worked well for me while hunting feral hogs.

This model has a shorter range but can still see prey up to 500 yards away. I found that was plenty of distance for hunting hogs. I also loved that it has both a day and night setting. It saved me the time of switching scopes as the light began to fade.

This optic also has an auto-focus feature. As I zoomed in on my target, the X-Sight LTV created a clear image without fiddling with settings. This feature saves hunters’ time and ensures an accurate shot.

The LTV allowed me to get up close and personal with wild hogs without putting myself in harm’s way. Getting too close can be dangerous, so having up to 15X zoom is handy.

The LTV is also the perfect alternative to the X-Sight Pro for hunters looking for a lighter night vision scope. It only weighs 1.7 pounds, compared to the Pro’s 2.2.

Pros:

  • Range of up to 500 yards
  • Up to 15x zoom
  • Included IR illuminator
  • High-quality day and night modes
  • Auto-focus

Cons:

  • Fewer features than the 4K model
  • Still on the pricier side

Sightmark Wraith Digital Night Vision Scope

Sightmark Wraith HD 2-16x28 Digital Night Vision Riflescope

Hunters looking for more customizability may turn to the Sightmark Wraith. Here’s why I recommend it:

I love tracking feral boar after dark, but sometimes I enjoy an early morning hunt. The Wraith cuts down on my equipment load by including a daytime color mode. I can also choose between the black and white or green settings once the sun goes down.

The customization goes further than that, though. The Wraith has ten different crosshair settings in nine colors. I can choose the best fit so I can accurately aim with ease. It also includes an eyecup to prevent light dispersion at night, but it’s easily removed for daytime use.

I also love how durable this optic is. It has a tough aluminum housing that ensures it isn’t damaged if I accidentally drop it while attaching it to my gun. Like the Armasight Vulcan, the Wraith is waterproof. It’s a significant relief knowing heavy rain won’t ruin the scope.

I did find some downsides with this optic. Like many other scopes on the market, it’s heavy. Hunters looking for a lightweight option shouldn’t purchase the Wraith. I also had issues with the software freezing, which can be detrimental to a hunt if it happens at the wrong time. I’d also prefer an auto-focus, so I don’t have to adjust it constantly.

Pros:

  • Black/white, green, or daytime color modes
  • 8X magnification
  • Durable
  • Variety of reticle options
  • Removable eyecup

Cons:

  • Heavy
  • Issues with freezing
  • Manual focus

Wicked Lights Infrared Night Hunting Kit

Wicked Lights ShotPro™ Extreme Range IR Night Hunting Light Kit with 850nm Infrared Ultra-Max LED for Night Vision Devices

Like the BESTSIGHT scope, this infrared kit doesn’t include a scope. However, it’s an excellent alternative for budgeting hunters. Here’s why I like it:

The most impressive aspect of this kit is that, despite only costing around $250, it can spot wild boar from extreme distances. The only other scope on this list with more range is the NightForce NXS.

I’ve had issues with spooking the boar with other similar products before I get a shot. However, this kit prevents that by allowing me to control the intensity and beam size of the infrared light.

Once I’ve adjusted it to the preferred size, I can use the lock mechanism to keep it that way. This way, I’m not constantly fiddling with the settings.

Hunters who hate heavy equipment will love this optic. It’s the lightest option on my list, weighing only .97 pounds. Plus, the package includes a storage case to keep my equipment secure when I’m not using it.

The only downside is that it doesn’t include a scope. It isn’t the best option for a new hunter who doesn’t have this equipment yet. In those instances, buying another optic may be better because it won’t require additional purchases.

Although it costs more than the BESTSIGHT system, it includes rechargeable batteries, so buyers don’t have to purchase them separately. If they don’t want to spend extra time locating the correct battery, the Wicked Lights kit is the perfect alternative.

Pros:

  • Lower price
  • Long range
  • Very lightweight
  • Rechargeable batteries included

Cons:

  • Scope not included

Night Owl Optics NightShot Night Vision Scope

Night Owl Optics NightShot Rifle Scope, Digital Night Vision Riflescope with IR illuminator, High Resolution, Weatherproof, Night Vision Rifle Scopes for Hunting

The NightShot is an affordable option that may work better for some woodsmen. Although it has some cons, it’s an excellent start for new hog hunters.

This optic only weighs 1.3 pounds, about half of what similar products on the market cost. I prefer lighter-weight scopes when planning a long day of tracking hogs. After a while, carrying heavier options can make my arms feel like lead.

I also enjoy how versatile this optic is. The NightShot fits on multiple guns so that I can use it with all kinds of setups. It can attach to rifles, airsoft firearms, non-magnums, and even some pellet guns.

It even has a 3X zoom feature, which is less common on cheaper night optics. Magnification can be crucial when I spot a feral boar in the distance. Without this feature, hitting the target is much more challenging.

However, this optic has several cons, so I didn’t rank it higher on this list. First, it can only see objects up to 100 yards away. Other products offer a much longer range, which is critical when hunting boar. These animals move quickly and can be challenging to spot.

Additionally, a fully-charged battery only lasts three hours. Many of my trips last much longer than that. Tracking hogs takes patience and time, and running out of juice can ruin a hunt.

Pros:

  • Less expensive
  • Lightweight
  • Compatible with multiple firearms
  • 3X zoom
  • Built-in IR illuminator

Cons:

  • Range of up to 100 yards
  • Three-hour battery life
  • It doesn’t work well in daylight

Armasight Night Vision Extended-Range Clip-On System

Armasight Night Vision Extended-Range Clip-On System

The Armasight Extended-Range optic is one of the more expensive systems, so I only recommend it for serious hog hunters. Here’s why I like it:

I can see boar up to 1,000 yards away with this equipment, which is pretty impressive. That’s double the X-Sight LTV, which has the next closest range. However, three other optics on this list can see hogs at the same or further away. I must also note that one customer reported being unable to see up to the maximum range, but I didn’t have this issue.

This optic also allows up to 5X magnification. I could see up close and personal with my target, lining up the perfect shot. This feature is excellent for boar hunting because coming too near these animals can be dangerous. Additionally, they’re smaller than other widely-hunted targets, so hunters need to zoom in to aim well.

Depending on the model, this system costs between $3,499 and $4,799. That’s a lot of money to spend on one night-vision scope. However, it’s worth it for hunters who can afford it because it’s highly versatile. I can use the same product on multiple types of firearms in my collection. Plus, it comes with a three-year warranty.

Pros:

  • Impressive range
  • 5X magnification
  • Compatible with a wide range of firearms
  • Three-year warranty

Cons:

  • Heavy
  • Some customers claim they couldn’t see the maximum range.

Hojocojo WiFi Digital Night Vision Scope

WiFi Digital Night Vision Scope for Rifles, 1313FT Night Vision Monocular for Hunting, IR Focus Adjustable, Save Photos & Videos, with 850nm IR Illuminator, Red Dot, 4X Optical Zoom

This Hojocojo optic is one of the cheaper options on my list. The price reduction does come with a few downgrades, but this product still has some impressive features.

I can see boars up to 437 yards away when using this scope. That’s a decent range for this price point. It’s more distance than I got from the NightShot, Wraith, and the BESTSIGHT system, which all cost significantly more than this optic.

Some lower-cost night vision systems don’t include batteries to reduce the price. I always find this frustrating because then I have to purchase them separately. However, this isn’t the case with this Hojocojo product.

This equipment is lightweight, making it easy to carry on long hunts. It also has a 4X zoom to see the target clearly. These features are impressive for a low-cost scope. However, the reduced price means buyers have to sacrifice quality a bit.

The first con of this product is the low resolution. The picture isn’t as clear as what I find with other options on this list. I can still take down a boar, but it’s a bit more challenging with the blurry image.

Another issue is the screen’s brightness. It’s almost blinding. Often, I had to squint to protect my eyes from the light. Unfortunately, this setting isn’t adjustable, either.

Pros:

  • Reasonable price
  • Range of up to 437 yards
  • 2 Lithium Polymer batteries included
  • Lightweight
  • 4X zoom

Cons:

  • Excessively bright screen
  • Low resolution

How to Determine the Best Night Vision Scope for Hog Hunting

Best Night Vision Scope for Hog Hunting

Now that I’ve discussed all these scopes, you’re wondering how to find the best night vision scope for hog hunting. It depends on your hunting needs. Here are the elements I recommend considering when making your purchase:

Want to know the best 100 yard scope? Click here to read it.

What Crosshairs Do You Prefer?

Night vision scopes come with all types of sights to aim at your target. I haven’t found one shape or color that’s necessarily better than another for dropping hogs. However, I do find some settings easier to see than others.

Likely, this will be the case for you, as well. Ensure the scope you’re purchasing offers the one you prefer. If it’s your first time buying night vision and you’re unsure which settings you like, look for a versatile optic that offers multiple shapes and colors.

How Much Range Does It Offer?

How Much Range Does It Offer

Next, consider the range. The longer distance a scope can see targets at, the better. It’ll make locating a hog much simpler. Plus, you can continue to track one if it takes off running. On the other hand, you can sacrifice a bit of range if you’re on a budget and don’t plan to hunt at extreme distances.

How Much Does It Cost?

You’ll need to find a high-quality night vision scope that fits your price range. These products can be costly. The pricier options will come with helpful extra features like Bluetooth ballistic calculators. However, you can still find excellent options that are more affordable.

If you’re on a tight budget, consider purchasing a night vision system rather than a scope. This way, you can convert a daytime optic you own into the perfect after-dark equipment. However, remember that some low-priced options don’t include batteries.

Also Read: Best Night Vision Scopes Under $1000

How Much Does It Weigh?

Next, think about how much the optic weighs. Often, these products can be pretty heavy. This factor may not affect you if you only go on short hunts. However, on a long night of tracking boar, excessive weight on your firearm can make your arms sore.

Most night vision scopes on the market are over two pounds. I recommend searching for lightweight options closer to one pound or less.

How Much Battery Life Does It Have?

Hogs can be challenging to spot. They’re small and fast, which makes tracking them difficult. Additionally, any avid hunter knows that sometimes you may see nothing all night. That’s why any digital night vision scope needs to have excellent battery life.

Before buying an optic, check out how long a fully-charged battery lasts. I recommend searching for products that can hold several hours of juice. This way, you’re never left with a drained battery while tracking a wild boar.

Is the Brightness Adjustable?

There are multiple reasons your night vision optic needs adjustable brightness. You want the light to be bright enough for you to see but not bright enough to scare away your target. As the moonlight shifts, you may need more or less light.

Additionally, an excessively bright screen can hurt your eyes. If the settings aren’t adjustable, this can be a significant issue.

What’s the Magnification Like?

Sometimes, you’ll need to zoom in on your target to aim correctly. Before purchasing a scope, determine how much magnification it offers. Night vision optics come with all levels of zoom, but I recommend one with at least 4X.

How’s the Resolution?

With night vision, the resolution is crucial. You need to ensure you can see objects on the screen clearly. A low-quality image can mean the difference between killing a boar and watching it trot off only slightly wounded.

FAQs

What Optic is Best for Hog Hunting?

In my expert opinion, the best optic for hog hunting is the NightForce NXS Rifle Scope. It has the most range and adjustable brightness for optimal nighttime shooting.

What Moon Phase is Best for Hog Hunting?

Hunters have various theories on the moon phase best for bagging a wild hog. For example, some claim the full moon is the worst time, while others swear it makes them move more. I find their movements have more to do with the season and time of day. I don’t recommend focusing much on these phases while hunting these animals.

Do I Need Night Vision to Hunt Hogs?

Hogs tend to move more at night, so it’s the best time to hunt them. You’ll need night vision optics to spot and shoot your target when there’s not much moonlight.

Conclusion

Keeping the feral boar population under control is essential, requiring high-quality optics. I recommend purchasing the NightForce NXS Compact Rifle Scope, as it’s the best night vision scope for hog hunting.

I love this product because it can see objects 25 yards or further, and I can easily focus-in on my target with the adjustable parallax. It’s a lightweight option at only 1.28 pounds, and the adjustable brightness ensures it doesn’t scare away any hogs. Other customers agree, as shown by the various five-star ratings.

Although the NXS is my favorite, all the scopes on my list are excellent options for hunting boar in the dark. I wouldn’t recommend anything other than the best optics for the job. Purchase the one that best fits your needs based on our guide, and then help the ecosystem by tracking feral boar on thrilling hunts!
