Based on my experience of 26 years of law enforcement experience as a street cop, another lifetime as a professional hunter and writer I tend to believe that I have some idea of what is a good holster and what is pure junk. Remember this the holster you select is like the closes your wearing. That system will be with you every day in some cases and as such, it can be a blessing or a pain in the back depending on the holster's design, composition, and ability to do the deed when required.

In this review, I will take the time to point out varied details that can be positive or negative as well It is my obligation in this case because bad information can get you killed, It is as simple and direct as that. Carrying a gun is not a video game, and as such requires some major thinking on the owner's part. An error here can get you or even some bystander killed in short order.

1. Pro-Tech holster

best holster for sig p238

This model of a carry holster is a clip on the best design, fabric-based regarding materials, and branded as a “Pro-Tech holster. I have used many of these designs over the years as an off-duty system ( police,) and general-purpose carry system. I have started with this system because it is simple, in a low budget price point, and be addressed as a starter system of sorts.

The element that I do not like about the holster is the fact that it is a soft fabric and as such it has a tendency to “ flop” or “ sag” just a bit after some extended use. For the most part, the holster is a solid well-made product, but it is only in the operational design do I find an issue whatsoever. Just not my style of the holster in the long run I must say Also be advised that the metal clip on the holster is well designed, makes for a sold lock to the belt, and rides on the hip with a degree of comfort

The Pro-Tec fits left or right-handed shooters, has a plastic thumb action thumb break, a vapor barrier to keep moisture off the weapon, and double-stitched nylon for strength. For a hunter on a morning part-time stand or even a carry backpack holster, the system is workable.

2. SIG Sauer P238 Hybrid IWB HOLSTER

sig sauer p238 holster

Here we have an inside waistband holster that is a Kydex material product that acts a good deal like leather but will not retain moisture. The broad line of retention materiel along the best line gives the holster a stable fit but also increases the mass or material against the body. It is just one thing to consider when selecting this style holster, but IWB Kydex holsters are popular for a reason and many people swear by them.

This holster retains a sweat guard system, is available in right or left-hand versions, retains a five-year warranty, and retains a good balance across the hip.

Belt clips or retainers all steel, and the on-off feature is effortless. Again, the only area I question is the overall size. Remember the SIG P238 is a very small gun, will it require this much material in a carry holster? That is up to the buyer to decide.

This holster looks to be molded to the frame of the Sig autoloader or a wheel gun by photo examples I have found. As such it should lock down well when in the carry position, and it offers adjustable retention as well.

3. Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.5 IWB Holster

sig p238 iwb holster

If you are looking for a SIG Sauer P238 IWB holster, this option from Alien Gear is molded for a perfect fit. Fully adjustable to get the rig at the correct height, and this is accomplished lacking any tools whatsoever.

Soft backing for a comfortable feel and a wicking system to prevent moisture buildup against the body and clothing. Material quality means it is built in the USA to strict standards. This holster is advised when total stealth is the name of the game.

In the area of retention, the weapon should be retainable to a high degree. Inside the pants means the weapon is tucked away completely. This can be an advantage when concealing the weapon, but it is a bit slower to the draw than some other systems.

4. DeSantis Cozy Partner Inside Waistband Holster

p238 ankle holsters

This holster is available for many different models but some will retain different setups is straps and other related parts. The holster is an inside-the-pants design and almost a reverse paddle holster but tucked away to a high level of concealment.

The holster makes use of a tension device and the detailed molding is also an aid for weapons retention. The 1 ¾ inch standard belt loop is designed into this holster. This belt loop hanger is not adjustable in some smaller pistol sizes.

Information I have recovered indicates that the holster is not a primary design for the P238, however, it could be adapted for use with that weapon.

5. Tuck-N-Go 2.0 Strong Side Cross Draw Holster By GALCO

sig p238 holsters

In this case, the holster being present can be addressed by this writer with some degree of real accuracy. I have been through the GALCo manufacturing facility and I came away with one though. Buy GALCO whenever possible because it is a very high-quality product and built to some very exacting standards, not to mention most of their products are backed by a lifetime warranty.

The holster being illustrated here is an ambidextrous leather holster made from premium center-cut steer hide. I know this as I have seen the cutting operation during pre-construction first hand. The holster retains a metal reinforced mouth of easy holstering, converts to the right hand or left-hand use, and allows for adjustable cant to suit the shooter's preference.

The tuckable clips fit 1 1.2” belts and are adjustable for strongside, crossdraw, or appendix carry. It also fits a SIG P238 with a Streamlight TLR-6 mounted, which makes it an excellent all-purpose carry holster. It's a bit pricy, but GALCO holsters are worth every cent and deserve a spot on any shooter's wish list.

While I do not personally use the inside pants holster I do use GALCO holsters as I will describe more in detail a bit later on in this review.

6. ComfortTac Ankle Holster.

sig p238 concealed carry holster

Here we have the deeply concealed carry holster in that it is an ankle model, and as such is packed very deep for a second gun situation in many cases. This model retains a full-width calf strap for total control against the leg, and also a second magazine pouch. In the holsters designed department one size fits all and that would also cover the Sig P238.

This setup is built using a neoprene band for comfort support, and a foam pad at the backside of the holster protects your skin from fittings on the firearm's frame, (controls.)

The holster is designed to be quiet at the draw position, and free off loop or buckle systems that can slow the recovery of the weapon, or make getting to the weapon a noisy proposition.

In my experience, I have never used an official leg holster but carried a small Colt 25 Auto in the right boot of a Wellington-style police work boot. Got to be a habit

When starting out with the sheriff's department before hiring on with the boys in blue. However, regarding the high-stress situations encountered by police officers today, and even the folks in the civilian world, the ankle gun is not the worst idea to be sure.

This setup is well designed and state of the art. The use of the full-width band keeps the weapon in line for faster drawing and re-holstering, and I like the idea of the soft wrap against the leg feature.

sig p238 ankle holster

If you don’t have a calf size over 17 inches the holster is a one size fits all. In the event, there are any issue at all with the product the manufacture offer's full refund or replacement with no questions asked.

If you are wondering where I stand in all this gun holster business I can say that I tend to follow the pattern of using a paddle high ride style holster almost all the time. The only exception to this is when holstering the massive Taurus 454 Cass, or the 44 Rem Magnum in a big Ruger Super Blackhawk 8 1/2” cannon.

These are hunting-style weapons and as such carry long barrels and are heavyweights as well, and demand an entirely different carry setup than something like a Glock or a polymer frame pocket pistol.

Brand wise I buy based on the old police training that gives me a solid comfort level in terms of retention and the ability to get my carry weapon into action quickly if needed.

The M&P Shield in a 9mm I carry every day is holster using the Safari land high ride three-loop pancake style. The holster by way of the third belt loop develops a cant angle that makes it quick to get into service, and also because the holster is real leather, modeled directly to Smith & Wesson with a good thumb snap, retention is no issue at all.

When positioned on my right side my elbow tip strikes the buttstock dead center. At the high angle. I have grown accustomed to wearing loose shirts untucked, hoodies during the cold weather, and very light jackets as the days get warmer. Summer months sports jerseys do the deal much of the time.

I do not ever carry open / exposed with an OWB holster as I believe that makes me target number one when or if a gunfight starts.

When a carry switch is made to a Smith & Wesson Model 60, 2” wheel gun my GALCO Pancake high ride goes to work. In this case the Performance Center Smith in a very ultra Air-weight 357 Magnum design and feels no different than my empty wallet.

Final Thoughts

With millions of handguns among the American public, the types and designs in handgun carry systems are just about infinite, which is why it's so important to be able to identify a quality holster.

Regardless of the type you select, make sure the holster fits properly, and be advised that strict training with that system is of major importance. To carry and gun and lack the training to use it as well as your support systems, is asking for an early grave if the bad stuff ever goes down and it is right in your face. Train like you fight and fight like you train. This is the cardinal rule among gun fighters everywhere.
