When it comes to range time, you always need both ear protection and eye protection. Ear protection comes in many forms. My personal favorite is electronic earmuffs. They make hearing the world possible while still protecting your ears from hearing damage and subsequent hearing loss.
They stay in place during dynamic movement. There is no risk of losing your ear protection while running and gunning. They add extra features like Bluetooth connectivity to connect mobile devices for clear communication and to listen to music.
Here are a few of my favorite sets of electronic earmuffs. We'll start with my ideal electronic hearing protector first.
3M Peltor Sport Tactical 500
Peltor Sports Tactical 100 Series
Walker's Razor Slim Electronic Earmuffs
Champion Vanquish Pro EarMuffs
Sordin Supreme Pro X
1. 3M Peltor Sport Tactical 500
Are you curious about your humble author's electronic hearing protection? Well, here they are the Peltor Sport Tactical 500s. These electronic hearing protection earmuffs go completely over your ears and canceling as many decibels of noise as possible.
The Sport Tactical 500s feature Bluetooth technology that makes it easy to connect your headphones to your phone, mp3 player or other devices. I attach the Sport Tactical to my phone. This allows me to listen to music as I shoot.
These headphones allow you to take phone calls, which can be great on the range and very convenient. The Peltor Sport Tactical 500s have recessed microphones. They are well protected and out of the way.
The Peltor Sport Tactical 500s have external volume controls to easily adjust the volume for calls and music. You will easily hear even the ambient sounds.
I've been using these for a few years now without issue. They connect to my phone with ease and do so instantly. I've worn them to various firearm events. They've never let me down. They are powered by two AA batteries that provide extended battery life.
The Peltor Sport Tactical 500s are incredibly comfortable, very well made, and easy to use. What more can you want?
2. Peltor Sports Tactical 100 Series
As you can tell, I'm a big fan of Peltor Sport Tactical 500s. For some, they may be costly. Peltor Sport Tactical 100s have some of the same features that make the 500s such impressive electronic ear protection. They are straightforward, but they offer the same protection as the Sport Tactical 500s.
The Sport Tactical 100s will perfectly protect you from gunshots for both indoor ranges and outdoor shooting ranges. They retain the same super comfortable earmuffs that provide a soft and relaxed fit for all-day wear. The Sport Tactical 100 headphones also have an adjustable headband covered in padding.
The Sport Tactical 100s lack the Bluetooth connectivity of the 500s, but they feature an aux port that allows you to connect your phone to your headset via an aux cable. With this audio input, you can listen to music and take phone calls.
The 100s do sport recessed external microphones for making phone calls or using two-way radios.
The 100s run on AA batteries and last even longer than the Sport Tactical 500s. These headphones also make it easy to hear conversations and the environment around you. They are an excellent choice for taking classes and running matches.
One of the benefits of the 100s and the lack of Bluetooth technology is the low-profile earcup design. It's much smaller and lighter in weight. This low profile design might be a good enough feature to make you choose the 100s over the 500s.
3. Walker's Razor Slim Electronic Earmuffs
Walker's is on the list one more time. The Razor Slim electronic earmuffs are some of the most affordable electronic earmuffs on the planet. These are lovely electronic muffs and were my first electronic earmuffs.
The Razor Slim electronic muffs are superbly small. They are thin, easy to use, and excellent on the shooting range. They provide more than enough protection from loud noises. I've used them on a full-auto, indoor, machine gun range. The Razor Slim earmuffs have a noise reduction of 23dBs.
The Razor Slim Electronic earmuffs are complete with directional microphones that make sure you can hear where noise is coming from. Most electronic muffs at this price range have standard mics that make it difficult to pick up the direction of the sound.
The Razor Slim muffs are powered by 2 AA batteries. There is an adjustable volume knob that's easy to reach and use. The Razor Slim earmuffs activate its protection level at any noise over 89 dBs.
The Walker Razor Slim earmuffs feature a minimalist earmuff design. My favorite earmuffs for shooting have lasted well over four years. I like to use them as a backup and for new shooters.
4. Champion Vanquish Pro EarMuffs
Champion is a company that creates a little bit of everything. This includes electronic earmuffs. The Vanquish earmuffs are pro-level muffs at basic prices. These electronic earmuffs are powerful, protective, and chock full of features.
The Champion Vanquish earmuffs are Bluetooth enabled so you can connect them to most mobile devices. You can take calls on a smartphone, listen to music, and even listen to range commands from a safety tower. This connection is outstanding and great for enjoying what you do on the range.
The Champion Vanquish comes with two full-range speakers that feed you excellent real-time sound from the world around you.
The Vanquish earmuffs have a 24 dB noise reduction rating and serve as hearing protectors from the loud world of firearms. These are some of the best earmuffs because they provide an incredibly comfortable fit and give you an outstanding degree of cushion.
The Champion Vanquish earmuffs are priced amazingly low for their capabilities and design. The only downside is that that is a bit bulky and can interfere with some long-range optic use. Other than that, these are perfect for modern shooting sports and range time.
5. Sordin Supreme Pro X
If you want the Cadillac or even the Rolls Royce of hearing protection, then the Sordin Supreme Pro X is for you. Sordin is a Swedish company that produces some of the best hearing protection on the planet. They outfit numerous armed forces and are worth their very high price tag.
The Sordin Supreme Pro X has an NRR of 25dB, making them class-leading. They also have four different levels of sound reduction/sound amplification. You can choose to reduce the protection to heighten situational awareness, listen to someone speak, or hear other low-level sounds.
The Sordin Supreme Pro X headphones come with integrated speakers that are incredibly clear and provide you with the ability to hear the world around you while blocking the noise of loud gunfire. The Sordin Pro X headphones are water-resistant and extremely durable.
They are perfect for shooting sports or tactical use. These headphones are designed to last, and it shows. They are slim, lightweight, and very comfortable.
They even have an integrated LED light to make seeing in the dark easier than normal. The Sordin Supreme headphones are not cheap, but sometimes you need the best, and here they are.
Silence is Golden
Guns are loud, it goes without saying, but many people do not realize how loud a gun range is. With potentially dozens of guns going off at one time, it's important to invest in high-quality hearing protection.
You don't just want to protect your hearing, but you want to be able to hear the world around you. Electronic earmuffs provide you with that. You can talk with friends, listen to instructions, and more while being protected from the loud sounds around you.
Investing in quality safety earmuffs is investing in your hearing.
